How to watch When Father Was Away on Business

1985 · Emir Kusturica · When Father Was Away on Business on Sightlines

4 things to watch and listen for on a first viewing, without spoilers, and 3 more once you have seen it. Each names something you can see or hear, the pattern it belongs to, and what noticing it gives you. How these keys work.

On a first viewing

  1. Watch scenes from about Malik's height, at the edge of rooms. (camera)

Filač keeps the camera attentive to how a six-year-old actually takes in adult events, partially, from below, watching without being let all the way in.

Payoff: You understand this family the way a child would, which is only ever partly.

  2. Watch how crowded every family gathering is with relatives. (staging)

Meals and rituals are staged as dense ensembles where several small dramas happen at once in the frame, none of them singled out for you.

Payoff: Nobody in these rooms is carrying the plot alone, and you have to choose where to look. In the reading: dispersive situation. The reading calls this a dispersive situation: several small dramas unfolding at once with no single one dominant.

  3. Listen for the phrase away on business, said again and again. (sound)

The euphemism gets repeated to Malik, to neighbors, eventually to almost no one in particular, and the film never once shows you where the father actually is.

Payoff: The sentence itself becomes the only version of the father the household has to live with.

  4. Watch Malik whenever he starts sleepwalking through the house. (setting)

He gets up at night with his eyes open and moves through the rooms, and the film never explains the habit or turns it into an obvious symbol.

Payoff: His body knows something the household has agreed never to say out loud.

Once you have seen it

  1. Look again at Zijo's warmth once you know what he did. (performance)

Nadarević plays the brother-in-law's jealousy and his duty as party functionary in the same easy gesture, so the arrest looks almost like a courtesy and the interrogation stays reasonable in tone.

Payoff: You cannot separate the personal grudge from the political duty, because the film never lets them come apart. In the reading: the gest. The reading calls this the gest: a posture that exposes a whole social relation without anyone explaining it.

  2. Notice that the labor camp itself is never shown on screen. (structure)

The film withholds any direct view of Mehmed's imprisonment, keeping the camera in the household instead, so what is left out carries as much weight as anything shown.

Payoff: The camp has no location the film will name, so it becomes something you feel rather than a place you ever see. In the reading: out-of-field-absolute. The reading calls this the absolute out-of-field: a place that cannot be located anywhere in the film's own geography.

  3. Track how many years and family chapters the film moves through. (structure)

The editing moves in soft chapters, a circumcision, a move, a father's return, an illness, so time passes the way remembered childhood does, not the way a plot usually does.

Payoff: The film feels like memory itself rather than a story being told to you in order.

Carry this in: Watch who repeats the phrase away on business, and watch their hands while they say it.
