How 3 Idiots has been received, argued over, and remembered.
It arrived as a record-smashing blockbuster — the biggest Bollywood hit ever at the time — with some critics grumbling about the sentimentality; a decade-plus on it's canonised as the definitive Hindi crowd-pleaser and the gateway Bollywood film for a whole generation of international viewers, especially in China, where it became a genuine phenomenon and launched Aamir Khan's superstardom there.
The perennial fight: is it a big-hearted classic or manipulative melodrama — with side-debates about its handling of student suicide and whether a 44-year-old Aamir Khan can really play a college kid.
'Aal izz well' escaped the film entirely and became an everyday catchphrase across India, and the movie itself is the automatic reference point in any conversation about exam pressure and the Indian education system; it also spawned remakes, including the Tamil Nanban and Mexico's 3 idiotas.
A fixture of IMDb-top-250 lists and 'best Bollywood starter pack' recommendations — for many non-Indian cinephiles it's still the first (and most rewatched) Hindi film they ever log.
