Persepolis · reception & legacy

2007 · Vincent Paronnaud

How Persepolis has been received, argued over, and remembered.

The arc

It arrived already crowned — Jury Prize at Cannes 2007 (over the Iranian government's formal protest) and an Oscar nod for Best Animated Feature — and it has never really dipped; if anything it's grown into the default proof that animation can carry adult political memoir.

What's debated

The evergreen fan grievance is the 2008 Animated Feature Oscar: plenty of cinephiles still argue Persepolis should have beaten Ratatouille, and its failure to crack the Foreign Language shortlist despite being France's official submission gets cited as a classic Academy blind spot about animation.

Its footprint

The 'Eye of the Tiger' singalong scene and the 'Punk is not ded' jacket are the film's gift-shop images — endlessly gif'd, quoted in Letterboxd reviews, and shorthand for teenage rebellion under any regime.

Where it stands

A fixture of the adult-animation canon and a Letterboxd staple — the hand-drawn black-and-white film people hand you when they say animation isn't a genre.

★ Did you know? Catherine Deneuve and Chiara Mastroianni, who voice Marjane's mother and Marjane, are a real-life mother and daughter — and they reprised the roles in the English dub alongside Sean Penn, Iggy Pop and Gena Rowlands.
