The arc

A sleeper smash in 2009 — it became the highest-grossing zombie movie in the US until World War Z overtook it — and it's since settled into comfort-rewatch status, helped by the retro glow of pre-Social Network Jesse Eisenberg and pre-stardom Emma Stone. The long-delayed 2019 sequel mostly reinforced how lightning-in-a-bottle the original was.

What’s debated

The perennial fan debate is Zombieland vs. Shaun of the Dead for the zom-com crown — affectionate American gloss versus the British original it inevitably gets measured against.

Its footprint

'Double tap,' 'Nut up or shut up,' the on-screen Rules, and the great Twinkie quest all escaped the movie into everyday quotation — and the Bill Murray cameo is still the benchmark against which all celebrity cameos are judged.

Did you know? It started life as a TV pilot: writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick originally conceived Zombieland as a series before retooling the script into a feature — and the famous cameo role was offered to several other stars (Patrick Swayze among those considered) before Bill Murray took it.
