A hit and an instant prestige piece in 1989, it's only grown — now sitting near the top of every 'greatest Malayalam films' list and treated as the gold standard of the Sibi Malayil–Lohithadas–Mohanlal collaboration.

What's debated

The evergreen grievance: Mohanlal getting only a National Award Special Jury Mention for this — while the Best Actor prize went elsewhere that year — is still relitigated by Malayali film fans as one of the great awards injustices.

Its footprint

Sethumadhavan became shorthand in Malayalam pop culture for a good man's life derailed, the Thilakan–Mohanlal father-son scenes are endlessly clipped and quoted, and the story travelled across India via remakes — most famously Priyadarshan's Hindi version Gardish (1993).
