The arc
Dumped direct-to-video by Full Moon in the mid-'90s and barely noticed, it's since been reclaimed as the dark horse of Stuart Gordon's Lovecraft cycle — the grim, mean one that horror fans now argue belongs right beside Re-Animator and From Beyond.
What’s debated
Fans still spar over whether its genuine nastiness — far crueler than Gordon's usual gonzo splatter — is the film's bravest quality or the thing that makes it hard to love.
Its footprint
It's a cornerstone of the Jeffrey Combs–Barbara Crampton–Stuart Gordon mythology, the third leg of horror's favorite actor-director trio, and its title alone became shorthand for Full Moon's whole direct-to-video era — enough to earn a 2020 remake produced by Crampton herself.
Where it stands
A cult object and perennial 'underrated Stuart Gordon' pick — the deep cut Lovecraft-heads cite to prove they've gone past Re-Animator.
Did you know? Producer Charles Band actually owned the 12th-century Italian castle where it was shot — he had the location (and the title) and asked Gordon to come up with a movie to fit it, so Gordon and co-writer Dennis Paoli loosely adapted Lovecraft's story 'The Outsider.'
