The arc

It arrived at Sundance 2013 as the festival's knockout — winning both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award — then got famously shut out of the Oscars a year later. Now it's canonised as ground zero for the Coogler–Michael B. Jordan partnership that went on to Creed, Black Panther and Sinners.

What's debated

The perennial debate is over its dramatic license — whether the invented moments (most famously the dog scene) are honest empathy-building or emotional thumb-on-the-scale hagiography.

Its footprint

It became a touchstone of Black Lives Matter–era cinema, endlessly cited in conversations about police violence on screen, and its total Oscar shutout is still invoked as Exhibit A in the #OscarsSoWhite conversation that erupted soon after.
