How Sense and Sensibility was received

2026 · Georgia Oakley · Sense and Sensibility on Sightlines

The arc

After a Leicester Square world premiere in mid-September 2026 and a Focus Features US rollout on October 16, critics landed at generally favorable while audiences ran warmer, with an 89% Popcornmeter score and an A- CinemaScore; the North American opening took fifth place, beating its modest $4-7 million pre-release tracking.

What’s debated

Nearly every review relitigates Ang Lee's 1995 film: one camp (Time Out, Slate) says Oakley's wilder, more elemental version earns its own place, the other (Boston Globe, HeyUGuys, World of Reel) says Lee already got it right and this one never matches his warmth.

Its footprint

The Telegraph's Robbie Collin set the frame by describing it as Austen stripped of its bonnets, while World of Reel turned the discourse itself into the headline, asking whether anyone needed another Sense and Sensibility; Gold Derby's roundup filed it as a "solid undertaking" that lacks the 1995 film's charm.

Where it stands

A week into US release it is too early for prizes or lists, but it marks Georgia Oakley's jump from Blue Jean to a $25 million literary production, and the early consensus slots it as a worthy, atmospheric Austen that has not dethroned Lee.

Did you know? Oakley fought to shoot on 35mm, saying she expected to be discouraged from it but considered the format integral to the film's process and look, and she deliberately cast Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles close in age because she read the novel above all as a love story between the two sisters.

Named by the director

  • Wuthering Heights (2011) — Andrea Arnold's adaptation, named as an influence alongside Robbie Ryan's period cinematography
