How to watch undertone
2026 · Ian Tuason · undertone on Sightlines
5 things to watch and listen for on a first viewing, without spoilers, and 3 more once you have seen it. Each names something you can see or hear, the pattern it belongs to, and what noticing it gives you. How these keys work.
On a first viewing
Watch Nina Kiri's face while Evy listens through headphones. (camera)
A large share of what you see is one woman listening. The camera holds on Kiri as she reacts to sounds you may or may not fully hear, then on dark corners of the house around her.
Payoff: Her face is your guide to what the recordings hold, and the dark edges of the frame are where you start searching.
Listen for audio Evy plays backwards. (sound)
Evy scrubs files, isolates sounds and reverses passages. Nursery rhymes, children's singing and deep distorted voices sit inside the couple's recordings, and you hear them through her playback.
Payoff: You take on her doubt and suggestibility, because you are doing the same close listening she is.
Count the tapes as each new file arrives. (structure)
Each recording comes in, gets played, gets argued over with Justin, then gets reread. The film moves in episodes like the podcasts that inspired it, and the information drips out slowly.
Payoff: The tape-by-tape rhythm makes you a co-host weighing evidence, not just a viewer waiting for a scare.
Notice Evy's three places: desk, mother's bedside, the hallway. (staging)
She sits at her equipment closed off in headphones, stands by her comatose mother, or walks the house toward a sound. Tuason shot it in his own childhood home, an ordinary lived-in house.
Payoff: Because the positions repeat, any small change in the house registers, and the sickroom keeps grief in every frame.
Listen to Justin, who is only ever a voice. (performance)
Adam DiMarco plays the co-host entirely off screen. He trades readings with Evy, one more skeptical, one more willing to believe, across a line rather than a room.
Payoff: Kiri's scene partners are all disembodied, so the house feels both empty and crowded.
The 3 rewatch keys open on this page when you choose "Seen it?".
Carry this in: Watch less and listen more. Most of the fear is in what Evy hears, so turn the sound up.
