How Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother was received
2026 · Bassam Tariq · Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother on Sightlines
The arc
Premiered as a TIFF 2026 Special Presentation, then opened limited on September 25 to near-unanimous acclaim: 96% on Rotten Tomatoes across 115 reviews, a Metascore of 84, and a 93% audience Popcornmeter. Amazon MGM's October expansion brought a 270% fourth-weekend jump to $1.2M in 824 theaters, but the raves have not become real money, with the domestic total still in the low millions.
What’s debated
Whether the cocktail of faith, family humor, and ultraviolence actually coheres: The Film Stage and Vulture argue the clashing blend is the whole point, while The A.V. Club counters that the film merely winks at its taboos around sex and gender instead of confronting them.
Its footprint
The Blade backstory is the story: In Review Online called it perhaps the strangest film ever to begin life as a Marvel movie, Vulture and The Wrap treated the detour as practically providential, and The A.V. Club's dissent, that it plays like a consolation prize for the stalled Marvel gig, became the counter-take. ComicBookMovie ran its early perfect Tomatometer as a rebuke to Marvel's stalled Blade.
Where it stands
It is only weeks old, but critics are treating it as Bassam Tariq's arrival, with Screen Daily hailing the audacious follow-up to Mogul Mowgli as redefining the action movie into something more introspective and compassionate, even as the box office keeps it a critics' favorite rather than a hit.
Did you know? The title comes from hadiths in which the Prophet, asked who deserves the best of a person, answers "your mother" three times before "your father"; and the film exists because Tariq and Mahershala Ali's Marvel Blade stalled, Tariq exiting in September 2022 after Ali had already done a year of edged-weapons training.
Named by the director
- Hayao Miyazaki — Tariq named Miyazaki as an influence, pointing especially to Princess Mononoke's moral ambiguity, where you cannot tell who is good or bad
- Princess Mononoke (1997) — singled out by Tariq for its moral ambiguity between good and bad
- Lone Wolf and Cub (1972) — named as part of the samurai and action canon Tariq wanted to create within, adding his own image to it
- Hard Boiled (1992) — cited alongside Lone Wolf and Cub as the action canon Tariq hoped to join with his own thing
