Barely a blip in Japan on release, it exploded in the West on Manga Entertainment VHS tapes and became one of the 'holy trinity' of 90s gateway anime alongside Akira and Ghost in the Shell. Today it's still canon for 90s anime heads, though modern rewatches grapple with just how gleefully lurid it is.

What's debated

The perennial fight: is it a stone-cold action masterpiece or an 'edgy 90s anime' problematic fave — with the film's treatment of Kagero and its sexual violence at the centre of every comment-section brawl.

Its footprint

Jubei's rain-soaked sword duels and the stone-skinned Tessai are endlessly referenced touchstones of 'adult anime', and the film's DNA runs through Western action cinema — the Wachowskis were avowed fans. For a generation, this was the tape you passed around to prove anime wasn't for kids.

Where it stands

A blood-splattered cult classic and permanent 'you must have seen this' entry in the 90s anime canon — less prestige than Akira, more beloved as pure pulp.

Influences Yoshiaki Kawajiri has publicly named — the director's own word, distinct from the inferred lines of influence.

Futaro Yamada — Kawajiri made the film as an homage to Yamada's ninja novels — the Japanese title Jūbei Ninpūchō deliberately echoes Yamada's 'Ninpōchō' series.
