How Just an Illusion was received
2026 · Olivier Nakache · Just an Illusion on Sightlines
What’s debated
It restages the perennial Nakache–Toledano split: audiences and much of the French press embraced it as a warm, funny memory piece, while sterner critics grumbled that the feel-good ending smooths over the story's darker shadows.
Where it stands
Too new to have settled anywhere yet — it's filed by fans as the Intouchables duo's most personal film, the one where they finally turned the camera on their own 1980s adolescence.
Did you know? The title is borrowed from Imagination's 1982 synth-funk hit 'Just an Illusion,' one of the period songs anchoring the film's 1980s soundtrack — and the directors have said the project was born during lockdown, when they found themselves digging through childhood photos of their Paris-suburb youth.
