How Sore: A Wife from the Future was received

2025 · Yandy Laurens · Sore: A Wife from the Future on Sightlines

The arc

Opened in Indonesia in July 2025 as a local event film, then spent the rest of the year climbing Letterboxd's global charts — within months it had cracked the platform's highest-rated films and topped its best-of-2025 sci-fi and romance lists, ahead of Hollywood tentpoles with a hundred times its budget.

What’s debated

The perennial debate is film vs. the beloved 2017 web series it remakes — whether Yandy Laurens' big-screen version deepens the original or whether the scrappy nine-episode YouTube run remains the purer artifact.

Its footprint

It became the flagship of Indonesian cinema's Letterboxd breakout — the film that non-Indonesian cinephiles suddenly had to explain seeing in their friends' four favorites, complete with an official Letterboxd Four Favorites spot for Laurens and stars Sheila Dara and Dion Wiyoko.

Where it stands

An instant Letterboxd darling and the current 'start here' answer for Indonesian cinema — rare company for a Southeast Asian romance in the platform's top-rated ranks.

Did you know? The story began life in 2017 as branded content: the original Sore web series was produced for sugar-free sweetener brand Tropicana Slim and premiered on the brand's own YouTube channel — a health-product ad campaign, shot in Italy, that fans loved so much it eventually became one of 2025's best-reviewed films. Dion Wiyoko returned as Jonathan eight years later.
