Eternity · reception & legacy

2025 · David Freyne

How Eternity has been received, argued over, and remembered.

The arc

An A24 Thanksgiving 2025 release that critics received with mixed-to-warm reviews but audiences turned into a word-of-mouth date-movie hit — roughly $35M worldwide on a $12M budget. Less than a year out, it's already better remembered for the arguments it started than the reviews it got.

What's debated

Team Larry vs. Team Luke — the internet split hard over which husband Joan should choose, with the 'did she pick right?' fight still raging in Letterboxd reviews and TikTok comment sections.

Its footprint

'Which husband would you pick?' became a couples litmus test on social media, with the Team Larry/Team Luke discourse doing the kind of numbers usually reserved for reality-TV finales.

Where it stands

Too new for canon, but it's already settled into the 'watch with your partner, argue in the car home' shelf of Letterboxd rom-com favourites.

★ Did you know? Freyne studied production design and wrote his college thesis on The Wizard of Oz and A Matter of Life and Death — he's said making his own two-world afterlife film was 'all my Christmases at once.'

Named by the director
