How to watch Digger
2026 · Alejandro G. Iñárritu · Digger on Sightlines
5 things to watch and listen for on a first viewing, without spoilers, and 3 more once you have seen it. Each names something you can see or hear, the pattern it belongs to, and what noticing it gives you. How these keys work.
On a first viewing
Watch how close the wide lens gets to Cruise's face. (camera)
Lubezki shoots VistaVision with very wide vintage Leica lenses and a slow-roving camera that Eggert found dreamlike and unsettling. The lens pressed up to the face, so skin and landscape share a frame, comes from The Revenant.
Payoff: The camera stays on Rockwell while he sells, never cutting away to expose him or to rescue him.
Look at the taxidermied alligators and the antler-lined mirrors. (setting)
Gassner and Johnson furnish Rockwell's world as grotesque excess, on a scope Eggert compared to Blade Runner 2049, and graffiti reading COMPLIANCE IS FREEDOM marks the signage. Lubezki's lenses drift through the rooms as if caught in the reflections.
Payoff: An infinity mirror repeats one man until there is no original, framed by dead animals: a trophy room for an ego. In the reading: crystal-image (hyalosign). The reading calls the infinity mirror a crystal-image: the actual man and his reflections no longer told apart.
Listen for natural sounds under the organ. (sound)
Sheldrake, in his first feature score, mixes sounds drawn from nature with discordant organ melodies; one summary heard it as lyrical and plaintive, undercut by ominous rumblings.
Payoff: While Rockwell talks, the living world his drilling is wrecking keeps making noise underneath him.
Watch Cruise's face under the fat suit and prosthetic nose. (performance)
Kazu Hiro built the transformation, gray hair included, and critics split: Eggert says Cruise disappears into it, Roy says he leans on it. His four-decade savior persona is turned inside out into the man who caused the disaster.
Payoff: Rockwell's power is no use against what he drilled, so he performs, and the makeup is part of the performance. In the reading: crisis of the action-image. The reading calls this the crisis of the action-image: a man who cannot answer what he caused, so he performs instead.
Listen for how fast the dialogue runs in the opening scenes. (sound)
Iñárritu screened His Girl Friday for the cast for its dialogue timing, and reviewers widely noted the snappy rhythms of the first act. Dazed counted meticulous design and a comedic puppet cat among the opening's pleasures.
Payoff: The film opens as screwball political comedy; get used to the tempo, because Rockwell never stops selling.
The 3 rewatch keys open on this page when you choose "Seen it?".
Carry this in: Watch the mirrors multiply Rockwell and listen for nature under the organ. His power is no use against what he drilled, so he performs.
