No flop-to-classic arc here — it landed as an instant phenomenon in 2001 (13 Oscar nominations, a fantasy film taken seriously overnight) — but its stock has somehow still risen: Fellowship is now routinely called the best of the trilogy, and 'they don't make them like this anymore' rewatches have pushed it into best-of-the-century conversations.

What’s debated

The forever-war among fans is whether Fellowship or Return of the King is the trilogy's peak — the purists' side-debate about the book changes (poor Tom Bombadil) never dies either.

Its footprint

'One does not simply walk into Mordor' became one of the internet's foundational memes, and 'You shall not pass!' escaped the film entirely — Boromir's finger-tap image is still meme-template shorthand for explaining anything difficult.

Did you know? Christopher Lee was the only member of the cast and crew to have actually met J.R.R. Tolkien, and he famously reread The Lord of the Rings regularly — he'd originally dreamed of playing Gandalf.

• The Lord of the Rings (1978) — Jackson has said Ralph Bakshi's animated version was his first encounter with Tolkien and sent him to the book — he even echoed some of its shots as homage.
