A TIFF 2023 sensation that critics adored but almost nobody saw in its quiet summer 2024 rollout — then A24's awards-season re-release turned it into the 'why did no one watch this' cause célèbre of the year, complete with screenings inside prisons.

What's debated

The fight isn't over the film — it's over the injustice around it: Colman Domingo losing Best Actor and Clarence Maclin missing a Supporting nod are still cited as prime evidence the Oscars ignore small films audiences skip.

Its footprint

Its rallying cry 'trust the process' and the question 'do you hear me? I hear you' escaped the film into awards-speech and Letterboxd-review vocabulary, and the A24 program that screened it inside American prisons became part of its legend.

Most of the cast are real alumni of the Rehabilitation Through the Arts program playing themselves — and via the film's Adapted Screenplay nod, Clarence 'Divine Eye' Maclin and John 'Divine G' Whitfield, both formerly incarcerated at Sing Sing, became Oscar nominees. Everyone on the production, from Colman Domingo to the crew, was paid the same rate and given equity in the film.
