How to watch Presence

2025 · Steven Soderbergh · Presence on Sightlines

5 things to watch and listen for on a first viewing, without spoilers, and 3 more once you have seen it. Each names something you can see or hear, the pattern it belongs to, and what noticing it gives you. How these keys work.

On a first viewing

  1. Watch how the camera moves when it gets curious or upset. (camera)

Every shot is the presence's view at about eye height. It leans in when interested, pulls back or rushes when agitated, and retreats into a closet to brood. Soderbergh operated the camera himself.

Payoff: The camera is a character with feelings, so its movement is a performance you read the way you read a face.

  2. Count the cuts to black between scenes. (cutting)

No scene cuts inside itself. Each is one roving take, and each ends in black. Days or weeks can pass across a blackout, and you have to piece together what happened in the gap.

Payoff: The blackouts work like blinks in the ghost's awareness, so missing time becomes part of how you watch.

  3. Listen for voices from other rooms before you see anyone. (sound)

Arguments drift up the stairs, footsteps sound overhead, and conversations are heard before the camera reaches them. The score stays low and never jumps at you.

Payoff: The presence knows this family mostly by listening, and so do you.

  4. Notice how often key talks are seen from a doorway. (staging)

The family walk past and straight through the frame without seeing it. Big exchanges play across a room or through a door frame rather than in close-up, with no coverage to cut to.

Payoff: You are a bystander to conversations you cannot join, which is the ghost's whole condition in this house.

  5. Watch Callina Liang's face when Chloe stops and listens. (performance)

Chloe is grieving a friend and is the first to sense something in the house. Liang plays her quiet and open while the others talk over each other.

Payoff: Her receptiveness gives the unseen watcher someone in the house who answers back.

The 3 rewatch keys open on this page when you choose "Seen it?".

Carry this in: You see only what the ghost sees. Watch where the camera chooses to go and where it hides.
