The arc
Barely seen on release outside Denmark — the quiet, low-budget capper to a trilogy Refn made out of necessity — but once Drive (2011) turned him into a name, cinephiles worked backwards and a striking number now call this the best of the three.
What’s debated
The eternal Pusher ranking fight: is III the trilogy's grim masterpiece or does Mikkelsen's Pusher II take it — with a side debate over whether its most notorious sequence is essential or just endurance cinema.
Its footprint
It got a delightful second life when Triangle of Sadness (2022) blew up and viewers realized the lovable oligarch was Zlatko Burić — the same actor who'd played Milo across all three Pusher films since 1996.
Where it stands
A cult trilogy-closer and 'early Refn is the best Refn' exhibit A — the Letterboxd deep-cutter's pick for his peak.
Did you know? Refn only made Pusher II and III because his production company went bankrupt after Fear X flopped — he shot the sequels to pay off the debt, an ordeal captured in the 2006 documentary Gambler.
