How Halloween II was received
1981 · Rick Rosenthal · Halloween II on Sightlines
The arc
Dismissed in 1981 as a gorier, emptier cash-in on a classic — even Carpenter was openly lukewarm on it — it's since been warmly reappraised as one of the stronger slasher sequels, with its fog-drenched hospital atmosphere now a selling point rather than a complaint.
What’s debated
The eternal fight: is the big lore-altering twist it introduced a stroke of mythology or the franchise's original sin — one so contested that the 2018 reboot erased it entirely.
Its footprint
The Chordettes' 'Mr. Sandman' is now permanently fused to the franchise because of this film, and its same-night, picks-up-seconds-later structure became a template slasher sequels (and the 2018 'Halloween') have been copying ever since.
Where it stands
A canon climber among slasher devotees — the sequel you're told to respect even if the original remains untouchable.
Did you know? John Carpenter, who wrote and produced but declined to direct, was unhappy with Rick Rosenthal's cut and personally shot additional footage to add more graphic violence — reshoots Rosenthal himself publicly grumbled about for years.
