How Captain Phillips was received
2013 · Paul Greengrass · Captain Phillips on Sightlines
The arc
Acclaimed on release (six Oscar nominations including Best Picture), it's since become Exhibit A in the 'worst Best Actor snubs' conversation — Tom Hanks missing a nomination for that final scene looks more baffling every year.
What’s debated
Film fans still argue over its truthfulness — real crew members of the Maersk Alabama publicly disputed the heroic portrayal of Phillips, claiming he ignored warnings to sail farther from the Somali coast.
Its footprint
'Look at me. I'm the captain now' escaped the film entirely and became one of the most durable memes of the 2010s, quoted in contexts that have nothing to do with piracy.
Where it stands
A canon-climbing modern thriller whose final minutes are Letterboxd shorthand for the best screen acting of the decade.
Did you know? Barkhad Abdi was a limo driver from Minneapolis with no acting experience when he was cast at an open call — Greengrass kept him and the other pirate actors away from Hanks until cameras rolled on the hijacking, and Abdi went on to win the BAFTA for the role.
