• All That Heaven Allows (1955) — Haynes explicitly built the film on Sirk's suburban melodrama, borrowing its central premise of a widow's transgressive romance.
• Imitation of Life (1959) — Haynes cited Sirk's race-inflected melodrama as a key model for weaving race into the 1950s domestic surface.
• Ali: Fear Eats the Soul (1974) — Haynes pointed to Fassbinder's own reworking of All That Heaven Allows as the bridge showing Sirkian melodrama could carry radical social critique.
• Douglas Sirk — Haynes named Sirk as the film's presiding influence, studying his framing, colour and lighting to recreate the 1950s melodrama from the inside.
• Rainer Werner Fassbinder — Haynes cited Fassbinder's Sirk-inspired films as proof the melodrama form could be both sincere and subversive.
