How to watch Anora
2024 · Sean Baker · Anora on Sightlines
5 things to watch and listen for on a first viewing, without spoilers, and 4 more once you have seen it. Each names something you can see or hear, the pattern it belongs to, and what noticing it gives you. How these keys work.
On a first viewing
Watch the red and amber light inside the club. (light)
Drew Daniels shot on 35mm and lit the Brighton Beach club warm: deep reds, stage amber, skin that glows instead of going clinical. The room is photographed as glamorous, never as squalid.
Payoff: Baker refuses to look down on where Ani works. The lighting treats her job as a job, done well.
Notice when the camera stops moving and the frames go wide. (camera)
The Zakharov penthouse gets cooler, harder light and formal compositions with a lot of empty space. Ani's Brooklyn gets close handheld. Two social worlds, photographed with two different camera manners.
Payoff: You can see the class gap in the lenses before anyone in the film says a word about money.
Listen for the club bass dropping away when Ani steps outside. (sound)
Inside, saturating bass wraps around her like a wall. Outside, Brooklyn is suddenly traffic, wind, ordinary noise. Matthew Hearon-Smith's score works the edges of scenes and almost never carries the middle.
Payoff: The music is her shelter at work. Every time it stops she is exposed to the world with nothing around her.
Watch Madison hold a joke and a defense at once. (performance)
Madison plays Ani fast, funny, physically sharp, quick to get loud when pushed. The comic attack and the guard are the same move. She learned Russian for the role and drops it in without showing off.
Payoff: Everything Ani does is a skill she works for. Watching her manage a room is watching labor.
Count how fast Ani gets what she wants early on. (structure)
She spots Ivan, reads him, works him, and within a week is married in Las Vegas. Every move she makes lands. Baker builds the first stretch so that action produces results, fast.
Payoff: Hold onto this rhythm. The film hands it to you early so that you can feel it change. In the reading: action-image. The reading calls this the action-image: a person reads a situation and acts on it, and the act changes what happens next.
Once you have seen it
Count how many places the search for Ivan visits. (structure)
Cars, doors, sidewalks, the club, more cars. Everyone moves constantly and nothing changes. Baker sustains the sequence past comfort so that all the running starts to feel like being trapped.
Payoff: Motion is not the same as power. The farce is funny because it works and frightening because it accomplishes nothing. In the reading: voyage / balade form. The reading calls this the balade: a trip taken at full speed that transforms nothing, because the situation was never negotiable.
Time the silences in the last twenty minutes. (cutting)
Baker cut the film himself and here he stops compressing. Scenes run in real duration, the score thins out to nothing, and the comic machinery is gone with no title card to mark its exit.
Payoff: The film changes genre without announcing it. You feel the switch in the length of the shots, not in the plot.
Watch Borisov's face when Igor is not speaking. (performance)
He arrives as muscle and mostly stands there. Across the last stretch his attention keeps landing on Ani, and he holds back from every move the others make. Stillness is the entire performance.
Payoff: The film's one act of plain decency comes from the man hired to be a threat, and it arrives without a speech.
Watch what Ani reaches for in the car at the end. (performance)
The wipers keep going. She does the thing her work taught her to do when a situation needs managing, and there is nothing left to manage. Madison plays it as reflex, not desire.
Payoff: One posture holds her whole position in the world. Kindness arrives in a language she was never paid to speak. In the reading: the gest. The reading calls this a gest: a posture that lays out a whole social relation without anybody explaining it.
Carry this in: Ani wins everything she goes after in the first hour. Watch for the moment her moves stop working.
