Its footprint

Its neon-soaked stills of 1980s Taipei — Fujifilm signs, empty offices, the skyline at night — are moodboard staples, and the English title's wink at Ozu's 'Tokyo Story' is one of world cinema's most repeated bits of trivia.

★ Did you know? The lead is played by Hou Hsiao-hsien — the other giant of Taiwanese New Cinema — who also co-wrote the film and reportedly mortgaged his own house to help finance it, while co-star Tsai Chin, a famous pop singer, later married Edward Yang.
