Del Toro's *Frankenstein* is, at its core, an affection-image film: Jacob Elordi's Creature — massive, stitched, yearning — becomes the moral center of the picture, and the nested dual narration, in which Victor's confession of hubris is withheld until the Creature has delivered his own account of abandonment and tenderness, is structured precisely so that we cannot act on feeling until the face has been fully registered. This is Dreyer's close-up logic transposed to the Gothic: emotion precedes judgment, and when Elordi's eyes catch the single-source candlelight that cinematographer Dan Laustsen modeled on *Barry Lyndon*'s naturalism, the effect is pity before argument — the creature seen before the monster is named. That same chiaroscuro scheme, steel-blue cold set against amber warmth, laboratory against firelit shelter, is mise-en-scène pressed to thematic purpose: the color temperature of the frame declares, before any dialogue, whether a space belongs to the hubris of creation or the fragile warmth of being alive. Enclosing both is the unmistakable logic of the auteur: del Toro spent three decades insisting this was the film against which he measured his career, and the result is saturated with his signatures — the dignified monster, the tyrannical father, the body as site of wonder rather than disgust. The lineage debt to James Whale's 1931 *Frankenstein* is explicit but inverted: where Whale's Karloff is a figure of dread whose pathos is incidental, del Toro returns to Shelley's original design — a Creature educated, eloquent, and destroyed by the maker's refusal to love what he made.
