The Currents · reception & legacy

2025 · Milagros Mumenthaler

How The Currents has been received, argued over, and remembered.

The arc

Premiered quietly in TIFF's Platform section in September 2025, then built a critics'-darling glow through San Sebastián and NYFF — by its US release it was sitting in the 90s on Rotten Tomatoes, a proper festival sleeper.

What's debated

The gentle split among fans: is its elusiveness the whole point, or does the third act explain too much of what was better left unspoken?

Where it stands

Too new for canon — for now it's a 2025 festival-circuit discovery passed between slow-cinema and Lucrecia Martel–adjacent Letterboxd circles.

★ Did you know? Mumenthaler has said the film's wandering 'flights of thought' — passages where Lina drifts after women she sees on the street — were shaped by Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway; it won the RTVE Otra Mirada (Another Look) Award at San Sebastián 2025.
