Critics split hard in 2001 — Ebert championed it while others dismissed it as dorm-room philosophizing — and that same split just calcified into cult status: it's now a rite-of-passage film for a certain kind of curious twenty-something.

The eternal fight: is it genuinely profound or just a stoned freshman philosophy seminar with gorgeous animation — and whether that distinction even matters.

Its footprint

It became the unofficial mascot of lucid-dreaming culture, and its wobbly rotoscoped look is instantly recognizable — shorthand for 'reality coming unglued' ever since. 'Dream is destiny' does a lot of work on Letterboxd bios.

Where it stands

A durable cult object and Letterboxd favourite — the 'watch this at 2am in college' movie that people either evangelize for or roll their eyes at, with little in between.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy appear as Jesse and Céline from Before Sunrise — a scene shot years before Before Sunset officially continued their story — and the animation was rotoscoped over live video by a team of artists using Bob Sabiston's custom software, with different artists giving different characters their distinct visual styles.
