It landed in 1984 as Brazil was emerging from the very dictatorship that had crushed the film's first incarnation, and was hailed instantly; decades on, the verdict has only hardened — Brazil's critics' association (Abraccine) voted it the greatest Brazilian documentary ever made and the fourth greatest Brazilian film of any kind.

Its footprint

In Brazil it's the ur-text of the modern documentary — the film every Brazilian doc filmmaker gets measured against — and its long-elusive status abroad ended with MoMA showings and a Radiance Blu-ray that finally put it in front of English-speaking cinephiles.

Where it stands

A stone-cold 'you must see this' of Brazilian cinema — near-unanimous canon at home, and a deep-cut badge of honor on Letterboxd everywhere else.

Did you know? The film Coutinho started shooting in 1964 was shut down within days of Brazil's military coup — the army raided the production, crew members were arrested and footage was seized — and he only resumed the project some seventeen years later, folding the surviving material into this one.
