Its footprint

The hand flex — Darcy helping Elizabeth into the carriage, then flexing his hand as he walks away — is one of the most memed and analysed few seconds of 2000s cinema, shorthand for an entire genre of yearning. Add 'you have bewitched me, body and soul' and the misty sunrise walk, and half the film lives on as reaction GIFs.

Where it stands

A canon climber turned certified Letterboxd darling — the definitive millennial/Gen-Z comfort rewatch, dutifully revisited every autumn.

★ Did you know? Emma Thompson did uncredited rewrites on the script — she declined a writing credit and appears only in the film's special thanks. And the endings differed by region: the 'Mrs. Darcy' kiss scene played in US cinemas but was cut from the original UK release.
