A festival darling at Rotterdam in 2018, it took a full year to reach Indian theatres, where critics raved but crowds stayed away — since then it's only climbed, now routinely called one of the great Tamil films of the 2010s.

What's debated

The recurring fight is over Mammootty: fans insist this is the career-best performance of a 400-film legend, and that Tamil Nadu's box office criminally ignored it.

Its footprint

Among South Indian cinephiles its chapter structure — each segment closing on a rumination about nature — is endlessly quoted and imitated, and the title itself (roughly 'boundless compassion') has become shorthand for a whole strain of humanist Tamil cinema.
