A festival hit at Toronto 2014 that became a full-blown critical phenomenon on its 2015 US release — and the film that turned Petzold from 'Berlin School auteur cinephiles know' into a director with a genuine international audience. A decade on it's routinely near the top of best-of-the-2010s lists.

The eternal Phoenix debate: can you accept that he doesn't recognize her — is the premise a fatal implausibility or the whole allegorical point?

Its footprint

The final scene — Nina Hoss singing Kurt Weill's 'Speak Low' — is now shorthand for 'perfect ending,' cited endlessly in best-endings lists and reviews that refuse to say anything more about it. It's also the modern touchstone for 'Vertigo, but from her point of view.'

Where it stands

Modern arthouse canon, a Letterboxd darling whose reviews are basically a support group for people wrecked by the last three minutes.

★ Did you know? Petzold wrote it with his longtime collaborator Harun Farocki, who died in July 2014 — Phoenix premiered two months later, making it their final work together.

Named by the director

Influences Christian Petzold has publicly named — the director's own word, distinct from the inferred lines of influence.

Vertigo (1958) — Petzold said the project began with a Farocki essay on Vertigo's male projection, and that Phoenix deliberately flips Vertigo's perspective to the woman being remade.
Return from the Ashes (1965) — Petzold openly discussed adapting Hubert Monteilhet's novel (filmed in 1965), itself a riff on Vertigo, which he and Farocki had circled since the 1980s.
