It killed at Sundance 2009 but Sony barely released it, and it grossed a blink-and-you-missed-it few hundred thousand dollars — then home video and the Adult Swim animated series turned it into a certified cult classic that comedy nerds now treat as essential.

The recurring fight isn't whether it's good — almost everyone agrees it is — it's why a spoof this perfectly executed flopped, and whether it belongs above Airplane! and Top Secret! in the parody pantheon.
Its footprint
It's endlessly quoted ('Sarcastically, I'm in charge', the china cabinet line) and its deliberate 'mistakes' — the boom mic drifting into frame, actors reading their stage directions aloud — became shorthand for how to parody with love; it also spawned a two-season Adult Swim animated series with Michael Jai White reprising the role.
