The arc
A low-budget unrated gore-comedy that shocked everyone by charming mainstream critics in 1985 — even Pauline Kael raved about it. It never needed a rescue: it went from midnight-movie sensation straight into the horror canon, where it's now a fixture of every '80s-horror best-of list.

The perennial fight is where it ranks in the splatstick pantheon — above or below Evil Dead II — plus whether its most infamous scene is transgressive genius or a step too far.
Its footprint
Jeffrey Combs's Herbert West and his syringe of glowing green reagent are horror-icon shorthand, endlessly referenced and cosplayed, and the tagline 'Herbert West has a good head on his shoulders... and another one on his desk' is a classic of the form. Its afterlife includes sequels and even an official stage musical directed by Stuart Gordon himself.
