Star Alfred Ryder had laryngitis when the production was taped, and the day after opening night Papp replaced him with Robert Burr — who had been understudying Richard Burton's Hamlet on Broadway that same season; Lee Grant later said the televised croaky performance effectively wrecked Ryder's stage career.
