It arrived as an event, not just a film — a TIFF 2025 gala world premiere (the first Arab film ever in that section), then Palestine's Oscar entry that actually made the Best International Feature shortlist at the 98th Academy Awards, all within months.

The recurring cinephile debate is whether its sprawling multi-strand ensemble dilutes the drama or IS the point — an epic of a whole society rather than one hero — with The Battle of Algiers comparisons drawn in nearly every review.

Its footprint

Jacir's line that the film is about Palestinians' 'refusal to disappear' became the headline that travelled everywhere, and screenings have doubled as communal events; Watermelon Pictures picked it up for North America.

Where it stands

Billed by its producers as the biggest Palestinian film production ever made, it slotted instantly into the canon of Palestinian cinema — Jacir's fourth straight feature chosen as Palestine's Oscar submission.

★ Did you know? The war that began in October 2023 halted the production just before cameras rolled — the shoot stopped and restarted four times, relocated partly to Jordan, and only later returned to the West Bank to finish; a village set painstakingly restored to its 1930s farming state was lost in the process. Jeremy Irons joined after meeting Jacir while they served on a Berlinale jury together.
