Mifune · reception & legacy

1999 · Søren Kragh-Jacobsen

How Mifune has been received, argued over, and remembered.

The arc

In 1999 it rode the Dogme 95 wave to a Silver Bear at Berlin as the movement's warm, crowd-pleasing third entry — but where Festen only grew in stature, Mifune has quietly faded into a footnote of the very movement it helped popularise.

What's debated

Is it 'Dogme lite'? Fans still argue over whether its gentle romantic warmth proved the manifesto could charm — or quietly betrayed everything the vow of chastity was supposed to be about.

Its footprint

Its title is a wink at Toshirō Mifune — one character does a full samurai routine in homage — making it the rare Danish farm dramedy that doubles as a Kurosawa tribute. It's also the film that launched Iben Hjejle toward Hollywood.

Where it stands

A beloved-but-forgotten entry in the Dogme 95 canon — Dogme #3, sought out today mostly by movement completists working backwards from Festen.

★ Did you know? Stephen Frears cast Iben Hjejle as John Cusack's love interest in High Fidelity (2000) on the strength of her breakout performance in this film.
