The arc
Arrived in June 2025 under a cloud of live-action-remake fatigue, then surprised people by landing better than most of its Disney counterparts — audiences embraced it even as critics called it 'faithful to a fault.' A year on, it's the film sceptics grudgingly cite as proof a remake can at least be done with care.
What's debated
The forever-debate: does a near shot-for-shot remake of a beloved animated film have any reason to exist, even a well-made one — or is 'actually good' beside the point?
Its footprint
Its cultural presence is largely inherited: Toothless remains one of the most beloved creature designs of the century, and John Powell's returning score (that 'Test Drive' flying theme) does heavy emotional lifting in reviews and edits alike. The first flight sequence rendered in live action became the film's signature talking point.
