Wednesday poster

Wednesday is a gothic dark-comedy mystery series set at Nevermore Academy, a school for supernatural outcasts, and centered entirely on Jenna Ortega's deadpan, acidic, and surprisingly layered portrayal of Wednesday Addams. Tim Burton's visual authorship — macabre production design, high-contrast color work, Hammer Horror sensibility — gives the show a distinctive aesthetic identity that reviewers consistently praise. Season 1 is widely regarded as tight, binge-worthy, and tonally confident; Season 2 received more mixed responses, with some finding it overcrowded with subplots. The show's DNA is gothic YA mystery with dry wit, not straightforward horror or traditional comedy, and it rewards viewers who enjoy a character-driven slow-burn wrapped in puzzle-box plotting.

From the reviewers

The way everything is colorful and vibrant while Wednesday is just colorless and unemotional makes Wednesday stick out so much from being so out of place.
Jenna Ortega shines as the oldest Addams' daughter, it's almost as if she was born to play the child of woe. Ortega transformation into Wednesday seems effortless, she has all the quirks, coldness and mean insults associated with her, but in such an expert hands, Wednesday does not seem cartoonish nor one-dimensional, she is portrayed with incredible depth.
The series is also directed by Tim Burton, and his love for the macabre and Hammer Horror is incredibly noticeable here, and so is his dark sense of humor.
Jenna Ortega did a masterful job as the stoic young woman where slight nuances of facial expression were subtle but expressive moments of character development.
It's dark, with some clever word play to give it a lighter tone at times as a nod to the older shows but...it's not a comedy.
