Tokyo Vice poster

Tokyo Vice is a US prestige crime drama based on American journalist Jake Adelstein's memoir about embedding with Tokyo's yakuza world in the 1990s. Produced in Michael Mann's signature gritty, cinematic style and filmed on location, the show distinguishes itself through exceptional authenticity — cultural, procedural, and environmental — in its depiction of Japan's criminal underground and impenetrable social systems. The tension is as much cultural as criminal: a gaijin outsider navigating racism, bureaucracy, and transactional relationships in a society that will never fully accept him. Ken Watanabe and Ansel Elgort are consistently praised. Reviewers with Japan experience overwhelmingly validate its texture; those without describe feeling genuinely immersed in an unfamiliar world rendered with rare seriousness.

From the reviewers

The scenes in Tokyo Vice are as authentic as I've seen - given it's based on a true story, filmed on location, and advised by Jake himself.
From the English teaching, the casual racism, long hours, the stifling bureaucracy and office culture, to the heavy smoking and drinking, to the Russian girls in the hostess "snack" clubs.
The neon wonderlands of Kabuki-cho and Shibuya are here on display, but it's portrayed dark, gritty, and noir given the subject matter.
Irony -- other shows work so hard to create a vibe of tension and potential threat. Here, if you can relate to this wonderfully relatable character, every second of every moment is filled with tension because the Japanese culture is one of the most unique on the planet.
The criminals have deep traditions like the Sopranos. The police and the crimes committed are violent and shocking, similar to The Wire, and the cinematography is dark, like Boardwalk Empire.
