The Shield (2002)

The Shield poster

The Shield is a relentlessly tense US prestige crime drama set in a corrupt Los Angeles police precinct, following Vic Mackey — a brutal, charismatic Strike Team detective whose escalating moral compromises form one of television's most compelling long-form downfall arcs. Shot in a gritty, handheld-inflected style that foregrounds authenticity over polish, the show rewards viewers who can tolerate moral ambiguity, graphic violence, and the sustained discomfort of rooting for a man doing genuinely terrible things. Its seven seasons are widely considered to improve continuously, culminating in a series finale that reviewers treat as among the finest ever produced. The show operates simultaneously as a procedural — with a parallel case-of-the-week strand — and as an intricate serialized thriller whose threads tighten progressively across the full run.

From the reviewers

rooting for Vic is easy, facing what he really is is not. What's right and what's wrong? When do the lines begin to blur? It's not always clear, but it's incredibly entertaining to watch.
there's always another separate case being pursued by Dutch Waggenbach and company. It keeps each episode going in different directions and the case is always interesting or has an unexpected twist when it's resolved.
I've seen a fair few TV series in my time, but no series finale that I've seen has even come close to matching this one. An absolutely incredible finale of a quality that any series would have been proud of.
It follows a rogue cop in the Los Angeles police department named Vic Makey (Michael Chilkis), who leads a criminal division task force that will do anything possible and go to any lengths to take down the criminals they're chasing, including breaking the law or working with other criminals.
The Shield is raw, violent and full of incredible suspense and intrigue.
