The Narrow Road to the Deep North poster

A five-part Australian prestige miniseries adapting Richard Flanagan's Booker Prize-winning novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North braids three timelines — a doomed pre-war love affair in elite Australian society, the hell of the Burma Railway POW camp during WWII, and a haunted post-war old age — through the life of a single surgeon. The show is visually ravishing and emotionally punishing in equal measure: cinematography reviewers call poetic, performances described as superb, and POW sequences regarded as among the most unflinching depictions of wartime brutality in recent television. It demands patience with its non-linear structure and rewards viewers willing to sit with moral complexity, unresolved grief, and the long shadow violence casts over a life.

From the reviewers

Photography is just alluring, poetic and yet so descriptive that you just can't look away.
The cinematography is one of the best I've ever seen. Mist, darkness, murkiness... it feels like material heaviness... rain, mud, humidity... It's so rare to 'feel' the visual in contemporay cinema
the constant change in timelines flipping back and forth from wartime, to pre-war, post-war then present day disrupted all natural flow. Character development (other than the main character, who was rather one demential) also suffered due to this.
It is haunting, erotic, intimate, brutal, humanistic, and historical. This was a show made to honor the fallen and to preserve memories and experiences and is unflinching.
Despite being a short series, you get to know every character in such a way that it becomes personal, you suffer with them, you laugh with them and you miss them when they are gone.
