The Boys (2019)

2019 · Action,Comedy,Crime · political-satire, sci-fi-speculative, superhero-deconstruction

The Boys poster

The Boys is a caustic, R-rated superhero deconstruction that treats its premise — what if superheroes were powerful, amoral corporate celebrities — as a vehicle for savage political satire and extreme violence. Airing on Amazon Prime from 2019, it pairs Karl Urban's blue-collar vigilante Butcher with Anthony Starr's chilling, charismatic Homelander in a show that reviewers describe as the antidote to sanitized Marvel/DC fare. It is simultaneously funny, gruesome, and ideologically pointed, skewering media manipulation, American exceptionalism, and the cult of celebrity. Binge-compulsive pacing and a genuinely unpredictable storyline make it one of the most-cited streaming phenomenon shows of the 2020s.

From the reviewers

Started watching this brilliant spin on a superhero show after dinner. Now it's 4 am and I have just watched the whole thing.
this show takes a much more realistic approach, about what is going to happen if superheroes had really existed
It has violence, gore, nudity, astonishing CGI effects and a very unpredictable and solid storyline.
The Boys is the perfect antidote to that insipid moralistic tripe that's spewed our TVs so thank you Amazon Prime for treating us like adults
this scrip is so freaking impressive, the over the top violence and gore along with great dialogues and brilliant acting easily brings it to the top
