Squid Game poster

Squid Game is a Korean survival-thriller in which economically desperate contestants are recruited to play deadly versions of childhood games for an enormous cash prize, orchestrated by masked elites for their entertainment. The show operates as a visceral genre spectacle and a pointed allegory about class, desperation, and the dehumanizing logic of late capitalism. Its Korean ensemble delivers performances reviewers consistently praise as exceptional, and its production design — pastel arenas, numbered jumpsuits, faceless guards — is immediately iconic. Pacing is relentlessly taut; emotional investment in individual contestants runs high, especially in episode six. It is best understood as prestige dystopian horror with serious social ambitions, aimed at viewers who can tolerate graphic mass-death violence and morally bleak outcomes.

From the reviewers

My God the actors who potrayed the VIP people cannot act. I cringed everytime they said a line. It felt like they were just reading them. Even the intonation was off.
The main characters were brilliant in their roles. I guess good actors figured that having parts where they're wearing masks the whole time wouldn't get them much exposure. The pacing and character development were superb.
Non English speaking directors can not distinguish bad acting from good in foreign actors. Test this theory on any film made anywhere at any time in a non English speaking country, which contains an "American" in it.
The contrast between the quality of acting in these cheesy foreigners and the Korean cast couldn't be more obvious.
I cannot believe that this high budget production is ruined by shockingly poor translation. For non-Korean speakers who must rely on the subtitles, please believe me when I tell you that the actual dialog is not that poor.
