Spooks (MI-5) poster

Spooks (MI-5) is a BBC espionage thriller following a small team of MI5 officers navigating real-world threats — terrorism, Russian intelligence, government conspiracies — with moral ambiguity baked into every mission. At its peak (series 1-8), it offered a rare combination of kinetic action pacing and genuine character depth, willing to kill major characters and pose hard questions about the ethics of domestic intelligence. The tone is tense, occasionally bleak, and emotionally invested rather than escapist. It drew a transatlantic audience who found it more cerebral than American equivalents like 24, while delivering comparable adrenaline. Later seasons (9-10) are widely considered a significant decline, with character coherence and plot credibility both collapsing.

From the reviewers

unlike many other similar programs, Spooks doesn't attempt to make the characters whiter-than-white. They're likeable, just not perfect
It also has the bravery to use storylines that are shocking, but are what make it the best.
Spooks is far more cerebral, and spends more effort on character and plot development.
One feels a true sense of realism watching spooks. The characters are real people with real faults. Another aspect I enjoy is the fact that there is no fear in "killing" a character off. One might consider that to be cruel but it once again lends to the realism of the show.
it is eerily prescient of recent events: the rise of populism, anti-immigrant sentiment, islamophobia, the use of torture, intelligence agencies jockeying for power and meddling in politics, international rivalry
