Luther poster

Luther is a dark, propulsive British crime drama built almost entirely on the shoulders of Idris Elba's towering performance as Detective Inspector John Luther — a brilliant, psychologically damaged senior officer operating in London's Special Crimes Unit. The show distinguishes itself from standard procedurals through its intense psychological texture, its morally complex villain-ally Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), and a willingness to put its protagonist in genuine moral and physical jeopardy. The tone is gritty, raw, and sometimes graphically violent, with a charged, electric score and tight pacing that makes episodes feel cinematic. It rewards viewers who want character depth, psychological menace, and a central duo dynamic that crackles with intellectual and sexual tension.

From the reviewers

He doesn't just act the part of Luther; he is Luther, fully inhabiting the role and moving like a force of nature through every scene. This is one of those rare times where you see an actor's innate intelligence and physicality used perfectly.
Elba is matched every step of the way by Ruth Wilson, playing a sort of female Hannibal Lector--brilliant, amoral, remorseless, scary, and, I daresay, sexy. She and Elba make quite a pair, and their interplay is priceless.
this series, while ostensibly a cop show, has its own look and feel. It plays more like a beautifully filmed, weird morality play.
Take a look at the impressionistic opening credits with Massive Attack on the soundtrack, and you'll know right up front that this is something special.
The audio track is charged, insightful and electric, employing talents such as Emiliana Torrini and her track 'Gun'.
