Dalgliesh poster

Dalgliesh is a beautifully crafted British period detective drama adapted from P.D. James's novels, set in the 1970s and built entirely around the brooding, poetic figure of DCI Adam Dalgliesh — a detective whose sympathy for human frailty and interior melancholy define the show's tone. Bertie Carvel's portrayal is praised as the definitive version of the character: restrained, observant, emotionally complex. Each case spans two episodes and unfolds as a genuine whodunit rather than a procedural tick-box exercise, with atmospheric cinematography, meticulous period detail, and scripts that honour the source material without padding. The audience is primarily literary-minded, British crime aficionados who value tone and character over action.

From the reviewers

Bertie Carvel picks up the baton, and takes over the role of would be Commander Adam Dalgliesh, we see his early cases, and hopefully his rise to the top.
It is restrained but under the restraint lies both a mounting tension and an overwhelming reflection of sorrow, encapsulated and reflected to us by Dalgliesh himself. Bertie Carvel captured that perfectly in the third episode.
Best cast Dalgleish yet. His sympathy for human frailty is more evident than earlier portrayals. Subtle, yet warm, as one would expect a poet policeman to be.
The scripts were sharp, with good plots and pacing, nice dialogue and lots of interesting character and period detailing.
It looks awesome, that E Type Jaguar must be someone's pride and joy, it's the terrific attention to detail like that, which made it so easy on the eye.
