Cracker poster

Cracker is a landmark 1990s British crime drama built entirely around Fitz, an obese, alcoholic, gambling-addicted criminal psychologist played by Robbie Coltrane in a career-defining performance. Set in Manchester, it follows Fitz as a freelance profiler for the police, dissecting serial killers, rapists, and moral catastrophes with razor-sharp psychological insight he cannot apply to his own collapsing life. The show is character-driven to its core, morally unflinching, and structurally brave — it kills key characters, depicts a central rape and its aftermath with sustained seriousness, and portrays perpetrators as human beings. Jimmy McGovern's scripts are dense with wit and darkness, and the supporting ensemble — particularly Lorcan Cranitch's DS Beck — is given the depth to carry full psychological arcs. Reviewers consistently invoke it as a canonical high-water mark of British television.

From the reviewers

Take an obese, alcoholic, chain-smoking, gambling addict; a sarcastic, pompous, belligerent, egotistical, selfish, self-absorbed, middle-aged Scottish psychologist and slap him in the middle of the Manchester Crime Squad as a free-lance criminal profiler.
What made this series so downright great were the characters and their relationships and interaction with one another and their environment. Never was a show so character-driven and in such an emotionally affecting way.
Coltrane projects him so charismatically that we even accept that the young, willowy and coldly sensual Jane Penhaligon can fall in love with him and take him to bed. Yep, the performance is that good.
Cracker was a series brave enough to unflinchingly kill-off key players and make drama from the fall-out. To let the pivotal female character be raped by a trusted colleague and then examine the devastation of that act at close range. To depict murderers and perverts as human beings, rather than just token cyphers of evil.
He's an almost supernaturally gifted psychologist, but he can't understand his wife and son; he's capable of real understanding and compassion, but is an inveterate user of people despite himself.
