Code of Silence poster

Code of Silence is a British crime thriller set in Canterbury, Kent, built around a deaf woman — Alison Brooks, played by Rose Ayling-Ellis — who is recruited by police as a lip-reading informant to infiltrate a dangerous criminal gang. The show draws its energy from an unusual premise and a charismatic central performance rather than from procedural rigour or gritty realism. Reviewers consistently praise the tension and the accessibility of the binge format, while also flagging frustration with the lead character's implausible recklessness and some contrived plot mechanics. It carries quiet social resonance around deaf identity, economic precarity, and the hunger to be seen — themes that elevate it above a standard six-part thriller.

From the reviewers

Rose Ayling-Ellis's acting here was superb. She hit all the right notes of naïvety, ambition, hope, love, frustration, fear & fearlessness. Her face was so expressive.
the suspense was top notch
It's important, amazing that we're seeing more deaf actors having central roles.
It's packed with tension and intrigue, in the first few episodes you will quite literally be on the edge of your seat, it will hold your interest from start to finish.
The use of a deaf informant could've been compelling, but it ends up feeling more like a narrative stunt than a thoughtful choice. The character is constantly thrown into implausibly dangerous situations, which stretches credibility thin.
