Case Histories poster

Case Histories is a BBC crime drama set in Edinburgh, adapting Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie novels through the effortlessly compelling performance of Jason Isaacs. The show follows a flawed, warm-hearted ex-cop turned private investigator who takes on cases driven by humanitarian impulse rather than profit, untangling multiple interconnected storylines per episode in ways that feel both intricate and emotionally grounded. The tone balances genuine darkness and violence with dry humor and bittersweet warmth. Edinburgh is used with full visual ambition. The series rewards viewers who appreciate character depth, literary plotting, and British restraint — delivering closure and catharsis without Hollywood gloss.

From the reviewers

Jason Isaacs is just right as the tough, selfless, good-hearted Brodie and each of the six episodes is filled with excellent acting and direction.
It's ingenious the way Kate Atkinson's narrative sees apparently disconnected stories seamlessly interweave and overlap.
Edinburgh and rural Scotland makes for a fantastic backdrop, and Atkinson's intricate plots are executed with superb clarity and yet not losing their great heart.
It's amazing that the series portrays so much violence and bleakness and yet you still love it and cheer on the good guys. And the good guys aren't perfect.
He has all the human qualities that so many of them lack, and his well-rounded portrayal is a triumph, in lifting detective stories onto a higher plane.
